Animals

  • Kilo (Commission) (8x10)

    Colored Pencil on Drafting Film

Kilo’s striking blue eyes and beautiful features were critical focus elements for this piece.

  • Monty (Commission) (10 x 10)

    Monty (Commission) (10 x 10)

    Colored Pencil on Drafting Film

The texture of Monty’s fur was achieved by developing deep shadows paired with bright highlights.

  • Mimi (Commission) (9.5 x 13)

    Colored Pencil on Drafting Film

Bright blue and purple undertones helped develop Mimi’s black fur. Combined elements from multiple photos for final composition.

  • Prince & Gracie (Commission) (11x16)

    Colored Pencil on Drafting Film

The reference photo for this one was dark but I personally know the dogs which helped getting an accurate color for the fur.

  • Sam I Am (8x10)

    Colored Pencil on Canson paper

A portrait of our great family dog, Sam. His white fur was fun to do on the colored paper.

  • Hope & Grace (Commission)

Colored Pencil, marker on Canson drawing paper

This commission was an early one and done before I knew a lot about layering and blending the colored pencils. As I look back at it I’m still happy with the fur and wood

  • Tigerwing (8x10)

Colored Pencil, Pan pastel, Micron pen on Stonehenge paper

Another inspiration from the Reiman Garden at Iowa State University. Getting the background smooth was time consuming. Drawing the leaf and butterfly were the fun part of this one.

  • Robin

    Pastel on UArt sanded paper

    Pastel study

  • Hidden in Sight

Colored Pencil on Canson drawing paper

Study of depth and minimal elements. Interesting how just one element like the eyes can create a compelling piece.
